Thomas Frank Reflects on Spurs’ 1-1 Draw with Sunderland

Tottenham Hotspur showed attacking intent and creativity on Sunday but could only manage a 1-1 draw against Sunderland. Spurs dominated much of the first half, creating several chances, yet failed to capitalize. Manager Thomas Frank said:

“The first half was very positive. In many phases, we looked good — aggressive with our pressure and creating lots of good opportunities that we should have done more with. The second half wasn’t as strong, but we still created eight or nine good situations in 5v5 or 4v4 scenarios. The key missed moment was not scoring the 2-0 goal — that would have killed the game. We tried, but they played well, and it ended 1-1.”

The draw adds to Spurs’ struggles at home, where they’ve won just twice in 10 games this season. Overall, Spurs have claimed only two wins in their last 11 Premier League matches and sit 13th in the table with 27 points from 20 games.

On the club’s recent decision to sell Brennan Johnson, Frank explained:
“These are decisions I fully back.

Some choices make more sense in the bigger picture over time. We decided to sell before Mo Kudus’ injury. Sometimes the timing can seem off, but there was an opportunity to sell a player the club hasn’t taken much advantage of in the past.”

Discussing the team’s missed chances, he added:

“We got into excellent positions, but either the sharpness, decision-making, or quality wasn’t there on the day. That’s always the difference.”

On Sunderland’s second-half adjustments:
“Honestly, they didn’t trouble us too much. They scored a very good goal, but the main thing is we didn’t make it 2-0. Football is about momentum. We couldn’t maintain pressure with or without the ball. We need to be decisive in key moments and continue working on it.”

Finally, on fan reactions, Frank remained positive:

“The supporters were excellent, backing us throughout. Of course, results matter most, and we wanted to win, but we couldn’t kill it with the 2-0.”
