Tottenham captain Cristian Romero has shared a brief 15-word message on social media after being charged by the FA following his red card in the 2-1 loss to Liverpool.

Romero was dismissed in last Saturday’s match against Arne Slot’s side after picking up two yellow cards, ruling him out of Sunday’s away fixture against Crystal Palace.

The Argentina defender has since been charged by the Football Association for allegedly not leaving the pitch quickly enough and for acting improperly towards referee John Brooks after his sending-off. An FA statement said Romero is accused of failing to leave the field promptly and/or behaving in a confrontational or aggressive manner towards the referee following his 93rd-minute red card. He has until Friday 2 January 2026 to respond to the charge.

In response, Romero posted several photos on Instagram showing himself with his wife and their two children enjoying the Christmas period. Alongside the images, he wrote: “Christmas reminds us that the greatest gift is our family. I love you my loves.”

Romero will miss the Palace match but is expected to return for Tottenham’s New Year’s Day clash with Brentford. Spurs then face Sunderland at home three days later before travelling to Bournemouth on January 7.

Speaking this week, Thomas Frank defended his captain, praising his passion and influence. The Dane said Romero is a player who lifts the team when at his best, pointing to performances such as the Europa League final and key away matches. Frank acknowledged that Romero’s intensity can sometimes lead to lapses in composure, something he believes the defender is working to improve.

Frank also felt Romero was frustrated by what he believed was a clear foul leading up to the incident, explaining that top-level players tend to react strongly in such moments. He admitted Romero made a mistake by making contact with the referee, which resulted in the yellow card, but argued the situation stemmed from a contentious decision. Ultimately, Frank said that having highly passionate players means accepting that emotions can occasionally spill over.
