Slot delivers crucial update on five players’ availability ahead of the Brighton showdown
Liverpool will host Brighton & Hove Albion at Anfield on Saturday, and the fixture could present a challenging test for the reigning champions. Ahead of the match, Arne Slot addressed several injury concerns following the midweek Champions League victory over Inter Milan.
Slot confirmed that Federico Chiesa, who missed out due to illness, has returned to training. “Federico is no longer ill. He trained yesterday and again today, so I expect him to be available for the squad tomorrow,” he said.
The news was less positive for Wataru Endo and Cody Gakpo. Slot revealed that both players face spells on the sidelines: “It’ll be weeks. Cody is dealing with a muscle problem, and Wata has an ankle injury.”
He also noted that Alexander Isak will need to be assessed after taking a knock in Italy: “Alex picked up a knock in the first half, so we’ll check today how well he’s recovered — whether he can start tomorrow, and if so, whether I choose to start him with Hugo Ekitike again or change things.”
This follows concerns raised after Isak’s struggles against Inter Milan, where one analyst noted he “really struggled with the physicality and intensity of the game.”
If Chiesa returns but Gakpo remains out and Isak is limited, much of the attacking responsibility will fall on Hugo Ekitike.
With Mo Salah still not fully reintegrated, Liverpool’s attacking options may be stretched, increasing the importance of Slot’s selection decisions. The big question will be whether Salah features before heading off for AFCON.
Slot admitted he has yet to fully discuss the situation with the Egyptian star: “I’ll speak with Mo this morning. The outcome will determine what Saturday looks like,” leaving supporters waiting to see whether the No.11 will be brought back into the squad or left out again.
With Chiesa returning and Ekitike prepared to lead the line, Slot’s management of injuries and forward depth could play a crucial role in how Liverpool approach the clash with Brighton — and in maintaining momentum heading into the festive period.
