Liverpool: Thierry Henry’s Eye-Opening Verdict on the Mo Salah Controversy Sends Social Media into a Frenzy
Thierry Henry has shared his thoughts on Mohamed Salah’s explosive post-match interview following Liverpool’s 3-3 draw with Leeds, and his comments have quickly spread across social media.
Liverpool’s recent form has been poor, and Salah has struggled along with the rest of the squad. In an effort to turn things around, Arne Slot has decided that Salah is no longer guaranteed a starting place.
Against Leeds, Salah was on the bench for the third straight game and didn’t feature at all. After the match, he delivered one of his most revealing interviews ever, openly expressing his frustration. He claimed the club broke promises about his playing time, accused someone internally of throwing him under the bus, and admitted his relationship with Slot has deteriorated.
Plenty of major figures in football have weighed in, and now Arsenal icon Thierry Henry has added his perspective. Appearing on CBS Sports on Tuesday night, Henry gave his honest assessment of the situation.
Henry began by saying Salah made a mistake by voicing his frustration publicly, recalling how he handled similar situations during his career.
“No one is talking about Mo Salah’s achievements right now,” Henry said. “We’re talking about this moment because I believe he handled it wrong. You never air your personal issues when the team is struggling. That belongs in the dressing room. I’ve been there—I’ve smashed things, I’ve confronted the boss, but always behind closed doors.”
Henry shared his own example from his time at Barcelona:
“When I was at Barça, they put me in the stands. Did I speak out publicly? No. We had just won the treble the year before, but I wasn’t performing, so I opened the door for someone else to take my place. I arrived at the stadium and saw I was in the stands—was I going to make a scene? Talk to the media? No. I have a career I’m proud of, but the team comes first. If I had something to say, I said it privately to Pep Guardiola.”
Henry, while praising Salah and everything he has accomplished, stressed again that the Egyptian handled the situation poorly.
“You must protect your team at all costs,” Henry added. “I understand wanting to talk and feeling frustrated. What I don’t understand is the timing and the way he did it. That was wrong. A coach’s only real relationship with a player is based on performance. If you’re not performing, your place isn’t guaranteed—especially at a club like Liverpool. It’s not about what he has achieved. I love Mo Salah, but that’s not the way to deal with things.”

Liverpool return to action on Saturday at home to Brighton. It’s unclear whether Salah will feature, and it would be his final match before joining Egypt for the Africa Cup of Nations.
