Arne Slot Issues New Update on Mohamed Salah’s Liverpool Future After ‘Secret Meeting’
Liverpool boss Arne Slot has delivered a fresh and rather telling update on Mohamed Salah’s uncertain future following the winger’s explosive recent interview.
Speaking on Friday (December 12) ahead of Liverpool’s Premier League showdown with Brighton at Anfield the next day, Slot addressed the growing speculation after Salah hinted that the Brighton match might be his final outing for the Reds. The Egyptian made the remark after the 3-3 draw with Leeds United at Elland Road on December 6.
In that fiery media appearance, Salah said he had been “thrown under the bus” for Liverpool’s disappointing start to the 2025/26 season. He also suggested that his relationship with Slot had “completely broken down” and implied that someone within the club “no longer wants him around”—despite signing a new two-year extension back in April. The 33-year-old has been benched against West Ham, Sunderland, and Leeds, and was left out entirely for Liverpool’s 1-0 Champions League win over Inter.
With Salah set to join Egypt for the Africa Cup of Nations beginning December 21, supporters are already wondering whether he has played his final match for Liverpool.
Naturally, Slot was questioned about the situation during his pre-match press conference. He responded:
“I’ll speak with Mo this morning and we’ll see what comes from that. The next time I talk about Mo should be with him, not here. There’s not much more to add. Today’s conversation will shape what tomorrow looks like. His representatives and ours have had plenty of discussions over the past week.”
Pressed on whether he personally chose to exclude Salah from the squad for the Inter clash, Slot clarified that the call was “a club decision”—though he was involved in it.
“When picking the line-up or squad, the decision is mine. But that doesn’t mean I don’t consult Richard Hughes or FSG,” he said.
Despite the tension, Slot insisted he sees “no reason not to want him to stay.”
Salah has scored 250 goals and registered 116 assists in 420 appearances for Liverpool since joining from Roma in 2018, helping the club to two Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FIFA Club World Cup, the FA Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, two Carabao Cups, and the Community Shield.
