Tottenham move into contention for Champions League left-back following eye-catching Barcelona performance – sources
Tottenham, Manchester City and West Ham have now joined Manchester United and Arsenal in monitoring Eintracht Frankfurt defender Nathaniel Brown, who caught the eye with his performance against Barcelona in Tuesday’s Champions League clash.
The 22-year-old, who already has two caps for Germany, set up Frankfurt’s goal in their 2-1 defeat at the Camp Nou and has been in excellent form throughout the campaign. Operating primarily as a left-sided defender, Brown thrives when given license to surge forward, and his modern, dynamic style has attracted significant Premier League attention. West Ham began scouting him earlier than most, but bigger clubs are now circling with potential moves being considered for 2026.
Tottenham’s interest is particularly notable, especially with Destiny Udogie currently sidelined through injury. Although Udogie is expected back in January, the situation has highlighted Spurs’ need for stronger squad depth if they are to push for top honours under Thomas Frank. As a result, Brown has become a player they are studying more seriously.
Manchester City are also tracking the situation, as they intend to bring in a new full-back within the next two transfer windows.
Arsenal and Manchester United have been watching Brown since early in the season, though neither club has taken steps toward a deal yet.
Frankfurt are open to selling the defender for the right price, despite only signing him in January 2024. Any transfer would likely exceed £50m, and Brown is reportedly willing to test himself in the Premier League if a suitable offer arrives. Elsewhere, Real Madrid have been handed encouragement in their pursuit of Tottenham centre-back Micky van de Ven, with Glen Hoddle claiming the Dutchman will not sign a new contract at Spurs. In addition, Spurs may face disappointment in their attempt to sign Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo. According to TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey, the 25-year-old is leaning toward a move to Liverpool despite interest from Tottenham.
