A previously overlooked interview with Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has resurfaced following Mohamed Salah’s explosive post-match remarks after the 3-3 draw with Leeds United.

 

Salah, frustrated after being benched for Liverpool’s last three fixtures, stopped in the Elland Road mixed zone and accused the club of “throwing him under the bus.” The 33-year-old also claimed he has “no relationship” with manager Arne Slot and suggested “someone doesn’t want me at the club.”

 

His comments sparked major controversy among supporters, pundits, and former players. Ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher blasted Salah’s words on Monday Night Football, calling them a “disgrace” and suggesting the interview was staged with his agent to “cause maximum damage” during an eight-minute rant.

 

Slot later confirmed that Salah was left out of the squad for Liverpool’s Champions League trip to face Inter Milan on December 9.

 

Amid all this, Van Dijk’s own post-match interview went largely unnoticed. The Dutchman acknowledged the tense atmosphere around the club but insisted it could not be used as an excuse.

 

“We can’t ignore the situation, but you have to embrace it,” he said. “Yes, it’s a problem, and it’s something we need to improve.”

 

Reporter Matt Stewart also claimed some foreign outlets were reporting—though not yet verified—that Van Dijk responded with “let him say something” when asked about Salah’s comments.

 

Looking ahead, the Liverpool captain stressed that his focus remained on the upcoming trip to Milan.

 

“My mindset is on getting a result against Inter and on the rest of the season. Right now, we’re not where we should be as a club,” he added. “We haven’t earned more than this, so all we can do is keep working. It’s tough.”
