Tottenham may table a £40m offer in 2026 for the Dutch centre-back to partner with Micky van de Ven.

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly preparing a £40 million bid for a Premier League defensive standout as they begin mapping out their 2026 squad overhaul.

Spurs’ inconsistency this season has exposed the need for further reinforcements. The North London side have struggled to keep up with several top-flight rivals, suffering difficult performances against Bournemouth, Arsenal, Chelsea and even Fulham.

As a result, Tottenham are expected to strengthen in several positions, with additions anticipated in goal, defence, midfield and attack.

Tottenham plotting £40m move for Jan Paul van Hecke

According to TeamTalk, Spurs have maintained their interest in Brighton & Hove Albion centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke after scouting him throughout the early part of the campaign.

The club could table a £40m offer in 2026, having been linked with the Dutch defender last summer but ultimately failing to secure his signature.

Van Hecke has featured in every Premier League minute for Brighton this season and recently scored twice in their 4–3 loss to Aston Villa. His contract runs until 2027, meaning he could be available within the next 18 months.

Brighton stand to make a major profit if they sell the 25-year-old, who joined from NAC Breda for just £3 million in 2020.

Fabian Hürzeler pushes back against Spurs interest

Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler has stressed how important Van Hecke is to the club and hopes the defender will commit to a long-term future on the south coast.

Speaking to The Argus, Hürzeler praised Van Hecke’s mentality and development, saying:

“Hopefully he has a long and bright future here. When you look at where he came from and the progress he’s made, it’s all down to his attitude and mindset. His commitment is always above what any coach could expect.

“That’s why he’s so valuable to us. As a Dutch player, he’s very straightforward and honest—qualities that are powerful within the team.

“He’s one of my leaders and part of the leadership group. This season he has taken on more responsibility and ownership. His next step is not just performing at a high level, but becoming a leader at this club.”
