Five Liverpool legends deliver their verdict on Arne Slot’s future – including Gerrard and Carragher

You might assume Arne Slot’s Liverpool were favourites to retain the Premier League title after cruising to the trophy in his debut campaign. The reality, though, is drastically different. The Reds have now suffered nine defeats in their last 12 outings across all competitions, and their poor performances have dragged them into the bottom half of the table.

Even with reports indicating that Slot’s job is safe for the moment, that hasn’t stopped prominent Liverpool figures – including Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard – from weighing in. But what exactly have those two, along with Steve McManaman, Stephen Warnock and Danny Murphy, had to say?

Danny Murphy

Former midfielder Danny Murphy believes it’s still too early to conclude that Slot isn’t the right man. Speaking on talkSPORT ahead of Liverpool’s 4-1 loss to PSV, he said:
“Let’s hope we don’t have to have that conversation.”

Murphy admitted that Liverpool face a tough stretch, with must-win games against West Ham and Sunderland looming.

“I like Slot — after meeting him, you can tell he has something. He’s smart, personable… but none of that matters if you keep losing games with Liverpool. So he’s got a huge week ahead.”

Despite Slot’s strong reputation in world football, he has repeatedly been outmaneuvered by managers with far weaker squads, and based on Liverpool’s rigid form, beating West Ham or Sunderland is far from assured.

Jamie Carragher

Never shy to give his opinion, Jamie Carragher stressed that Liverpool have always been a club that values managerial stability. Speaking to CBS Sports, he said:

“Liverpool isn’t a sacking club. They operate differently to most top European clubs where the manager rules. Liverpool have never sacked a manager who has won the league.”

Carragher was stunned that some fans were already discussing Slot’s future after the loss to Nottingham Forest:
“I’ve always believed in backing the manager. I’m angry at the players.”

Stephen Warnock

Stephen Warnock – who made 67 Liverpool appearances between 2000 and 2007 – echoed Carragher’s sentiments, insisting that dismissing Slot would be a rash move.

“I don’t think there should be a knee-jerk reaction,” he said, adding that things weren’t perfect earlier in the season even when results were positive.

“It’s a very tough moment for Liverpool right now, but something didn’t feel right from the start.”

Steve McManaman

Steve McManaman also believes sacking Slot would be premature. Speaking on TNT Sports, he said:
“I think it’s far too early to sack him. Considering what he achieved and the fixtures he’s had, he deserves time.”

He noted that Liverpool are still alive in the Champions League—however slim their chances—which should delay any talk of replacing the manager.

“With the run of fixtures and Liverpool still in the Champions League, it’s too soon for that kind of question. You’d have to see them knocked out of Europe and struggling at the bottom before it becomes fair.”

Steven Gerrard

Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard, who joined the conversation with McManaman, shared similar views. Drawing on his own managerial experiences, he said:

“That’s football today. I’ve been in that position. If results aren’t there, serious questions will be asked – that comes with the territory at the top level.”

Gerrard, whose opinion carries immense weight among supporters, remains optimistic:
“The good moments under Slot will come. We’ve lived through tough spells before. I’ve been on both sides — it’s going to turn.”
