Fabrizio Romano has suggested that one of Liverpool’s rumored targets is more likely than not to leave his current club during the January transfer window.
Following Lewis Steele’s report last week that the Reds are “certainly keen” on Antoine Semenyo in 2026, The Athletic’s David Ornstein revealed on Monday that Bournemouth feel they may be “powerless” to stop the forward from departing the Vitality Stadium mid-season.
The 25-year-old Ghana international has a £65m release clause, which must be triggered by a specific date in January to give the Cherries time to find a replacement before the winter market closes. Romano now claims there’s a better-than-even chance Semenyo could leave Andoni Iraola’s side in the coming months.
Speaking on the Here We Go Podcast, Romano said:
> “I think there’s a good chance Antoine Semenyo will move in January. It’s not guaranteed, but we should keep an eye on it. Maybe 60–70% for January, and 30–40% for a summer move. The release clause is valid in the January window—£60m plus £5m in add-ons.”
With two of the most reliable transfer insiders hinting at a possible exit, the likelihood of a winter move for Semenyo appears to be rising.
After splashing nearly £450m on new signings over the summer, how probable is it that Liverpool will make another mid-season move? Steele has downplayed the chance of January additions, though that doesn’t rule out Richard Hughes looking to strengthen Arne Slot’s squad if the right opportunity presents itself.
Does Semenyo represent that opportunity? The fixed release clause provides a clear target for Liverpool, and Bournemouth seem ready to accept the possibility of losing him in the winter. While adding a centre-back remains the club’s priority due to squad depth concerns, if a chance arises to secure the Cherries attacker, Hughes could be poised to capitalize on his Vitality Stadium connections.
