Liverpool left-back Andrew Robertson revealed that he couldn’t stop thinking about his late teammate Diogo Jota in the build-up to Scotland’s crucial match last night.
Robertson was visibly emotional after a historic win for Scotland, who struck twice late on to defeat Denmark 4–2 and book their place at the 2026 World Cup — the men’s team’s first appearance at the tournament in 28 years.
Speaking after the final whistle, he paid a heartfelt tribute to Jota, who tragically lost his life in a car crash over the summer. Robertson explained that the pair often talked about fulfilling their World Cup ambitions together.
Robertson couldn’t shake Diogo Jota from his thoughts
In an interview with the BBC, Robertson opened up about how heavily Jota was on his mind, recalling their shared dream of making the next World Cup after both missed out last time — Jota with Portugal, and Robertson with Scotland.
“I’ve been trying to hold it together, but today I’ve really struggled. At my age, this might be my last shot at playing at a World Cup,” Robertson said.
“I couldn’t stop thinking about my friend Diogo Jota today. We talked so often about making this World Cup — he didn’t play in the last one for Portugal, and I missed out with Scotland. I know he’d be smiling down on me today.”
