Harvey Elliott’s future at Liverpool appears uncertain as he struggles for regular game time this season.
The 22-year-old joined Aston Villa on an initial loan deal last summer, set to become permanent once he reaches 10 appearances (The Athletic). However, since early October, Elliott has only featured in five matches. Lewis Steele recently suggested a recall to Anfield could be on the cards, though “nothing is in the works yet.”
Speaking on the Inside Track podcast (via Football Insider), Pete O’Rourke indicated that Villa may now be hesitant to make Elliott’s move permanent. He noted:
> “It hasn’t been an ideal loan for anyone, and Elliott hasn’t had the minutes he would have hoped for. Aston Villa seems to be having second thoughts about turning the deal permanent. There’s a chance he could return to Anfield in January if he isn’t in Emery’s plans.”
Elliott has played just 167 minutes for Villa this season and is reportedly frustrated with his limited opportunities. If he isn’t close to reaching the 10-game threshold by January, remaining at Villa may serve no purpose. A return to Liverpool would allow the club to reassess his situation and explore future options.
While it seems unlikely Elliott will feature for the Reds under Arne Slot—given his struggles for minutes last season—the door isn’t fully closed. Injuries or other absences among Liverpool’s attackers could create an opportunity for him to revive his Anfield career.
One thing is clear: the current situation cannot continue indefinitely. If Emery doesn’t plan to use Elliott, Liverpool must act to bring him back and let him reassess his options.
