It’s no secret that Liverpool’s season has been rough, but new data suggests things may be even worse than many realised.
Surprisingly, fresh statistics reveal that Arne Slot’s team currently hold the second-worst defensive record across Europe’s top five leagues since May. Only Wolves have conceded more during this period, highlighting that Liverpool’s struggles didn’t suddenly begin this season.

Defensive concerns—accurate or exaggerated?
Liam Togher of Empire of the Kop told CaughtOffside that while the numbers look alarming, they lack important context. According to Togher, around a quarter of those goals came in the final four matches of last season, when Liverpool had already wrapped up the Premier League title and naturally eased off.
Still, conceding 27 goals in just 18 games this season—an average of 1.5 per match—is far from acceptable for reigning champions. Togher points to several factors: individual errors, unsettled defensive partnerships following summer changes, less midfield protection when Ryan Gravenberch or Alexis Mac Allister were absent, and the impact of Alisson’s injury, even though Mamardashvili has performed well.
