A major new report has raised serious questions about Pep Guardiola’s future at Manchester City, just days after he reached the milestone of managing his 1000th professional match.
Guardiola marked the occasion with a convincing 3–0 win over Liverpool, courtesy of goals from Erling Haaland, Nico Gonzalez and Jeremy Doku. The victory — his 716th as a manager — moved City to within four points of Arsenal and placed them firmly back in the title race after a slump last season. With fresh coaching additions, including James French, Kolo Toure and Pep Lijnders, and several new signings, Guardiola has looked revitalized as his team rediscovered their top form.
Despite committing to a contract that runs until 2027, a new update suggests this campaign could be his last at the Etihad.
Journalist update on Guardiola’s future
According to The Times journalist Paul Hirst, there is a belief behind the scenes that Guardiola may decide to walk away at the end of this season. Sources close to the situation say that leaving after his tenth year in charge “could make sense,” noting that he has already won every major trophy and has a stable squad in place.
City fans recently displayed a banner reading “Volem que et quedis” (“We want you to stay”) to show their support. Although Guardiola has a reputation for seeing out contracts, speculation persists every time he approaches a deal’s final stages.
With Haaland leading the attack and Doku bringing a new level of unpredictability, this version of City is seen as the next evolution in Guardiola’s project.
“We’re more unpredictable now — in our attack and defense — and that’s good,” Guardiola said after the Liverpool win. “It gives us energy during games.”
