Florian Wirtz has responded defiantly on Instagram following Liverpool’s seventh loss of the season.
After a 3-0 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday dropped the Reds to eighth in the Premier League, Gary Neville criticised the 22-year-old, claiming he “looked like a little boy” against Pep Guardiola’s dominant midfield.
Wirtz, who joined from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer for £116 million, is still searching for his first goal under Arne Slot after 16 appearances. Despite the criticism, the German midfielder took to Instagram on Monday night, sharing a rain-soaked photo of himself from the Etihad clash with the determined caption: “We keep going.”
It’s clear Wirtz is aware of the outside noise surrounding his performances, much of which has been exaggerated. While fans would have hoped for more attacking returns by now, his effort and work rate have never been in question—especially after his brilliant display against Real Madrid just a week ago.
The midfielder’s attention now turns to international duty with Germany, where he’ll look to help Julian Nagelsmann’s side seal World Cup qualification. A successful campaign could restore his confidence before returning to Merseyside, where Liverpool desperately need a spark to reignite their season.
We may not have seen Wirtz at his best in a Liverpool shirt yet, but his message says it all—he’s ready to fight, silence the critics, and prove why the Reds invested so heavily in him.
