Harvey Elliott moved from Liverpool to Aston Villa during the summer transfer window, hoping for the regular playing time he struggled to find at Anfield.
The young, versatile midfielder was largely underutilized by Arne Slot last season, prompting him to consider a move. Unai Emery appeared to be the solution when he brought Elliott in on a loan deal, but so far, things haven’t gone as planned.
After seven appearances and just one goal, Elliott is finding it challenging to reignite his career. The 22-year-old has only featured in four Premier League games this season, sparking speculation that he could return to Liverpool in January.
Villa’s loan deal includes an obligation to make the transfer permanent for £35 million, but that could change depending on his performances.
Former Aston Villa CEO Keith Wyness offered insight into Elliott’s uncertain future on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast:
“I’m surprised because I think he’s a good player, but he hasn’t quite caught Emery’s eye,” Wyness said. “There’s also talk that if he reaches 10 games, it triggers the obligation to buy. Liverpool reportedly want him back, so if the loan doesn’t go through, he could return to Anfield. Many Liverpool fans I’ve spoken to would prefer seeing Elliott on the pitch rather than some of the new expensive signings.”
Emery has struggled to get the best out of Elliott, and with Villa’s current form, a January return to Liverpool is not out of the question. Not only is Elliott underperforming at Villa, but Liverpool are also short in midfield—a role Elliott effectively filled from the bench last season.
Was letting him leave a mistake? It’s too early to say for sure, but one thing is clear: Slot’s squad could benefit significantly from having Elliott back.
