Liverpool supporters are urging the club to offload a particular player in the January window following his display at the Etihad.
It was another disappointing Premier League outing for Arne Slot’s side, who suffered a 3–0 loss to Pep Guardiola’s team in the Spaniard’s 1000th match as a manager.
Erling Haaland put City ahead in the 29th minute, shortly after stand-in keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili saved his penalty. Liverpool believed they had levelled through Virgil van Dijk, but the goal was ruled out after VAR confirmed Andy Robertson was offside in the build-up.
The Premier League clarified: “The referee’s decision of offside and no goal was checked and upheld by VAR — Robertson was in an offside position and was judged to be clearly impacting the goalkeeper.”
City doubled their advantage before half-time thanks to Nico Gonzalez, and Jeremy Doku sealed the win with a superb strike in the second half.
Although the whole Liverpool side struggled, much of the frustration from fans online was directed at Ibrahim Konaté, whose recent form has come under scrutiny amid rumours he could leave on a free transfer at the end of the season.
Fans shared their anger on social media. One wrote: “Sell Konaté in January — his head is already in Madrid.”
Another said: “Konaté has to go. His passing and decision-making are terrible.”
A third added: “Can we send Konaté to Madrid in January? Gomez can finish the season.”
Someone else commented: “When Konaté makes one mistake, more always follow. He becomes a liability.”
A final fan joked: “If Madrid take him for free, we’ve tricked them.”
