A Liverpool defender is reportedly holding talks with Bayern Munich, despite Real Madrid also showing interest.
Liverpool smashed their transfer record twice over the summer—first spending £116 million on Florian Wirtz, then sealing a £125 million move for Alexander Isak.
They also added Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Giovanni Leoni and Freddie Woodman to the squad. However, their window ended on a sour note when the deal for Marc Guehi fell through.
Crystal Palace cancelled the move after failing to secure a replacement for their captain.
It’s unclear whether Liverpool will attempt to sign Guehi again later in the season.
Guehi had been viewed as a potential successor to Ibrahima Konate, who has been strongly linked with a departure. Konate’s contract expires at the end of the 2025/26 campaign, and reports recently suggested he was close to an agreement with Real Madrid.
But new claims from Foot Mercato reveal that Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano has verbally agreed to join Madrid, prompting Bayern to identify Konate as a possible replacement.
German outlet BILD states that Bayern have already initiated contact with Konate’s representatives.
Liverpool are still trying to persuade the French centre-back to sign a new contract and remain at Anfield.
Since arriving from RB Leipzig in 2021, Konate has made 147 appearances, scored six goals, and won the Premier League and two League Cups. Losing him would be a major blow, as he has built a strong defensive partnership with captain Virgil van Dijk.
Konate and Liverpool face Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium this Sunday.
