Liverpool may already be regretting one of their major summer departures, with plans reportedly underway to bring the player back.
Arne Slot’s squad had a hectic transfer window ahead of the 2025-26 season, breaking the British transfer record twice. Early in the summer, Florian Wirtz joined from Bayer Leverkusen for around £116 million. That record was soon surpassed when Liverpool signed Alexander Isak from Newcastle United for £125 million.
Meanwhile, Harvey Elliott moved to Aston Villa on loan, with a £35 million obligation to buy clause if he makes 10 appearances this season. However, the winger has struggled in the Midlands and hasn’t featured in the last five matches under Unai Emery.
Everton’s former CEO Keith Wyness, now a football consultant for top clubs, believes Liverpool might be wishing Elliott were still at Anfield given their current squad issues. Speaking on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness suggested the England Under-21 international could still return to Liverpool.
“I’m surprised because he’s a talented player, but he hasn’t quite caught Emery’s eye,” Wyness said. “There’s also a lot of speculation: if Elliott reaches 10 games, Villa’s obligation to buy kicks in. Liverpool might even want him back, so if the loan isn’t finalized, he could return. Perhaps Liverpool wish he was on the bench right now given their struggles with these expensive new signings. Fans I’ve spoken to would rather see Elliott on the pitch than some of these other signings.”
Meanwhile, Liverpool are reportedly eyeing Brighton winger Yankuba Minteh as a potential replacement for Mohamed Salah. Former Manchester United and Blackburn scout Mick Brown claims Brighton could demand up to £100 million for the star. Minteh has impressed this season with one goal and three assists in 10 appearances, but his price tag could be a concern.
This follows reports from 24 October by Football Insider suggesting Salah is currently struggling at Liverpool, unable to meet the high standards he has set for himself.
