Liverpool Take Control in Pursuit of PL Star as Real Madrid Exit Transfer Battle

Liverpool are now believed to be leading the race to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, with Real Madrid seemingly no longer in contention.

The England centre-back is nearing the end of his contract at Selhurst Park and is set to become a free agent ahead of next summer’s transfer window. Liverpool have maintained strong interest in Guehi, despite failing to secure his signature last summer.

According to AS, little has changed in the 25-year-old’s situation, with the Reds still viewed as his most likely destination, even with other clubs monitoring the deal. Real Madrid have effectively pulled out due to the defender’s salary expectations, making a move to the Bernabéu highly unlikely.

Although more twists could emerge before the transfer is finalised, Guehi is still thought to be prioritising a switch to Anfield. Liverpool were extremely close to completing the move last summer before Palace blocked it at the final stage, but the player is expected to get his desired move this time.

Bayern Munich are also mentioned as potential challengers for his signature, so a late hijack cannot be ruled out.

AS also report that Real Madrid have shifted their focus to other centre-backs, including Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konaté, who is also entering the final months of his contract. Liverpool will hope to convince Konaté to extend his stay, but if he departs for free, securing Guehi at no cost would represent smart business.

Konaté has been an important figure for the Reds, but Guehi has proven his quality in the Premier League and looks capable of stepping into the Frenchman’s shoes should he leave.
