“They’re clearly the favourites” – Steve Nicol predicts Real Madrid win over Liverpool

Steve Nicol believes Liverpool need to put in a strong, convincing performance when they face Real Madrid at Anfield in the Champions League tonight. Liverpool recently snapped a terrible run of six defeats in seven games by beating Aston Villa 2–0, a result that lifted their spirits ahead of Xabi Alonso’s return.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, have been dominant this season, winning 13 of their 14 matches and scoring 34 goals, many of which have come from the in-form Kylian Mbappé.

Nicol’s view on the match

Speaking on ESPN FC, Nicol explained what Liverpool must do to compete with the 15-time European champions:

> “Real Madrid are favourites, home or away. Based on current form, they simply are.”

He added that Liverpool’s attack must be sharp, direct, and make smarter decisions, while the defence needs to stay tight and unified — especially against Mbappé. Nicol stressed that this game is all about Liverpool’s performance level.

When asked for a score prediction, he backed Madrid to win 2–1, saying:

> “You have to judge what’s in front of you, and right now Real Madrid are just much better. Liverpool’s defence hasn’t shown enough.”

Anfield could make a difference

Liverpool were flying the last time Madrid visited Anfield, during a seven-game winning streak. This time, after an inconsistent start to the season, they are nowhere near that level. On form, Alonso’s side are clear favourites.

Still, European nights at Anfield are unique, and the atmosphere could inspire Liverpool to rise above expectations. If the defence can contain Mbappé — who struggled at Anfield last November — the Reds could earn a positive result.

Nicol isn’t confident, but we believe Liverpool can step up, secure at least a draw, and take momentum into their upcoming clash with Manchester City.
