There are no certainties in football. Only a tiny percentage of young players go on to become professionals, and countless clichés warn them of how difficult the path is. Sadly, these sayings are repeated because they are true. Even those with obvious natural ability can fall short and never fulfil their early promise.
Pressure doesn’t help either. When a young talent is hyped up, the expectations placed on them can become overwhelming. Some believe that happened with Ravel Morrison at Manchester United — a player Sir Alex Ferguson believed would be a star. The Liverpool equivalent would be a youngster receiving similar praise from someone like Steven Gerrard.
That’s exactly what happened with Adam Lewis. The full-back came through Liverpool’s academy and was highly rated. Gerrard, who coached the under-18s after retiring, singled Lewis out as a future star. However, the career many expected hasn’t materialised.
Gerrard’s Huge Praise for Adam Lewis
Gerrard told the Liverpool Echo that Lewis was the best player he had ever seen at that age group — even better than Gerrard himself when he first broke into the senior team:
> “Adam’s been outstanding for us all season. If he keeps this level, he won’t be with this team much longer. I haven’t seen anyone as good as him on the left side at that age.”
Lewis said in a 2017 club interview that his dream was to play for Liverpool’s first team. He achieved that in 2020, playing a full match in a 1–0 FA Cup win at Anfield against Shrewsbury Town. But that would be his only senior appearance before his career headed elsewhere.
Life After Liverpool
Still under contract with Liverpool, Lewis spent time on loan at several clubs — Amiens, Plymouth Argyle, and Livingston — before finally finding consistency at Newport County. Across two seasons, he became a key player and even recorded an assist against Manchester United in the FA Cup.
Many assumed he would sign permanently for Newport, but instead, he joined Morecambe on a free transfer. He was a regular starter there, even though the team finished bottom of League Two and dropped out of the Football League in 2024/25.
Despite the relegation, his performances were strong enough for Chesterfield to pick him up for their League Two campaign in 2025/26. Game time has been limited, though — he has yet to start a league match, with all his appearances coming off the bench. He did score on his first start in the Football League Trophy against Crewe.
Internationally, Lewis reached the England U20 squad and made two appearances, along with several caps at younger age levels.
