Arne Slot has given a candid assessment of Caoimhin Kelleher’s departure, admitting the goalkeeper made the right decision to leave in pursuit of consistent playing time.
Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s weekend clash with Brentford, Slot reflected on the upcoming reunion with the 26-year-old, who joined the Bees this summer in a deal worth up to £18 million — ending his ten-year stay at Anfield.
In his farewell message, Kelleher expressed deep gratitude to Liverpool’s staff, teammates, and fans for “helping shape me into the man I am today,” adding that the club and city would “always hold a special place in my heart.”
Addressing the move, Slot told reporters:
> “Maybe goalkeepers are a bit of an exception, but in general, it’s not healthy for a player to spend more than a year mostly on the bench. It’s difficult to stay fully motivated without regular games. For Caoimh, he did this for years, and I understand why he felt it was time to play regularly — and he’s proven himself right because he’s doing very well.”
It’s an honest take from the Liverpool manager, who has already seen several squad players such as Jarell Quansah and Harvey Elliott depart in search of more minutes elsewhere.
Since his move, Kelleher has quickly established himself as a calming presence at Brentford, impressing with his composure and leadership.
Slot also provided an injury update before the game, revealing that Jeremie Frimpong is sidelined with a hamstring issue and will be out “for a while.” Meanwhile, Alexander Isak and Ryan Gravenberch remain doubtful, while Alisson is still unavailable.
> “Alex is not too bad — there’s a question mark for the weekend. The same goes for Ryan,” Slot explained. “Alisson won’t be in the squad tomorrow; that’ll take a bit longer.”
The match promises to be an emotional occasion for Kelleher, who made 67 appearances for Liverpool, kept eight clean sheets, and lifted both the FA Cup and League Cup.
