Six months ago, Liverpool celebrated their 20th league title in spectacular fashion at Anfield, following a 5–1 thrashing of Tottenham Hotspur. Now, that triumph feels like a distant memory. Over the past month, the Reds have suffered four Premier League defeats — the same number they endured throughout the entire 2024/25 campaign, two of which came after the title was already secured.
Once five points ahead of Arsenal, Arne Slot’s side now trail the Gunners by seven points and have slipped to seventh place — exactly halfway between league leaders Arsenal and 17th-placed Fulham.
Sky Sports poll delivers harsh verdict
A Sky Sports poll asked fans whether Liverpool would retain the Premier League title, and only 7% believed they would.
Speaking on The Fan Club, former QPR and Southampton striker Charlie Austin agreed with the majority:
> “They’ve lost four in a row and are seven points behind Arsenal. Arsenal are the only consistent team right now — they’re doing what Liverpool did last year: not always playing great, but still winning. Liverpool, on the other hand, look poor. I haven’t seen anything from them this season to suggest they’ll win the league — especially after these last four games. They’ve been bad and haven’t deserved to win.”
Liverpool must stop the slide
While Liverpool’s recent defeats have all been narrow — each by a single goal — and two late losses to Crystal Palace and Chelsea were particularly cruel, the overall performances have been unconvincing. Even during their earlier seven-game winning streak, the flaws were evident.
Last week’s 5–1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt seemed promising but ultimately proved misleading. Club legend John Aldridge has criticized the team’s “naive” defending and questioned the players’ “desire.”
The statistics underline the problem: Liverpool have already conceded 14 league goals this season, while Arsenal have shipped just three. It doesn’t take a tactical genius to see where the issues lie.
Jamie Carragher has described the situation as “crisis time,” and few would argue otherwise. Still, with three-quarters of the season left to play, a seven-point deficit isn’t insurmountable. The talent in the squad is there to turn things around — but unless the Reds rediscover their form soon, their title defense could be over before Christmas.
