Liverpool FC is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former goalkeeping coach Jose Manuel Ochotorena, who has died at the age of 64.
Ochotorena joined Liverpool in 2004 alongside manager Rafael Benitez, having previously worked with him at Valencia. During his three years at Anfield, he was part of a golden period that saw the Reds lift the Champions League in 2005, the FA Cup in 2006, and reach another Champions League final in 2007.
After leaving Liverpool, he returned to Valencia, combining his club role with duties as goalkeeper coach for the Spain national team. He played a key role in Spain’s historic era of dominance, helping the team to win Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup, and Euro 2012.
Ochotorena remained with Valencia after stepping down from his Spain role in 2021. As a player, he made over 100 appearances for Valencia after joining from Real Madrid in 1988, where he had previously won three La Liga titles, two UEFA Cups, and a Copa de la Liga.
Born in San Sebastian, he also represented Tenerife, Racing Santander, and Logroñés, and earned one senior cap for Spain.
