Liverpool’s latest Premier League defeat has sparked sharp criticism from club legend Jamie Carragher, who believes a major flaw is pushing the team into what he called “crisis territory.”
Speaking on Sky Sports Premier League after the Reds’ 3-2 loss to Brentford — their fourth straight league defeat and worst run since February 2021 — Carragher highlighted a recurring issue: a lack of physicality.
“I want to talk about Liverpool’s lack of physicality,” the 47-year-old began. “Conor Bradley gets too tight because he’s not confident enough in his strength, and that’s why he picks up so many yellow cards.”
Carragher went on to note that the problem runs throughout the team.
“Liverpool don’t win the first challenge or pick up the second ball,” he said. “They’re simply not built for the physical demands of the Premier League this season.”
Brentford again exploited this weakness through their trademark long throws, with Dango Ouattara capitalizing early in the match. Carragher argued that Liverpool’s shortage of “height and strength” in defensive positions leaves them wide open to such direct tactics.
The former defender didn’t mince words about the current situation.
“We’re in crisis time for Liverpool right now,” he warned. “Serious questions will be asked of the players, the coaching staff, and the people above them — because with the money spent this summer, this run is unacceptable.”
Fellow ex-Red John Aldridge echoed those concerns, describing the team’s performances as deeply troubling for both fans and former players.
Although goals from Milos Kerkez and Mohamed Salah offered some hope, the damage was done, leaving Liverpool seventh in the table and searching for answers.
Carragher has repeatedly questioned the team’s defensive setup this season — and his warnings now seem more pressing than ever as Liverpool’s title defence continues to unravel.
