Brentford appeared to mock Liverpool manager Arne Slot with a savage social media post shortly after defeating the Premier League champions.
The Reds’ miserable run under Slot continued with a fourth consecutive league defeat, having already fallen to Crystal Palace, Chelsea, and Manchester United before Sunday’s 3-2 loss to the Bees. Their only win in recent weeks came in Europe — a 5-1 Champions League victory over Eintracht Frankfurt.
Keith Andrews’s Brentford side struck early at the Gtech Community Stadium, with Dango Ouattara finding the net just five minutes in after Liverpool failed to deal with Michael Kayode’s long throw. Kevin Schade doubled the hosts’ lead, but Milos Kerkez pulled one back for Liverpool in first-half stoppage time.
The Bees were awarded a penalty following a VAR review when Virgil van Dijk was judged to have fouled Ouattara in the box, allowing Igor Thiago to convert from the spot. Mohamed Salah reduced the deficit late on, but Liverpool couldn’t avoid yet another defeat — their fourth in a row — leaving them four points behind league leaders Arsenal, who still have a game in hand.
Speaking after the match, Slot admitted his disappointment:
> “Of course it’s disappointing again. You always hope that after a midweek win — even with only two days’ rest — you’ll get a better result and performance. But tonight was far from what we expect of ourselves. Even in our previous losses, the performances were much better than this.”
Slot has often been criticised for offering excuses after defeats, blaming opponents for using long-ball tactics, set pieces, or altering their usual line-ups against Liverpool.
That pattern was evident after last weekend’s 2-1 loss to Manchester United, when Slot complained that Ruben Amorim had changed his starting XI — leaving out striker Benjamin Šeško — just for the Anfield clash.
Brentford’s social media team clearly hadn’t forgotten those remarks, posting a cheeky message on X after their win:
> “Must have been that unchanged team.”
A sharp dig — since the Bees had indeed fielded the exact same starting lineup that beat West Ham 2-0 the week before.
