Liverpool boss Arne Slot has finally lifted the lid on why Caoimhin Kelleher decided to leave Anfield, in what has been described as one of the most emotional departures of the summer.
Speaking in an interview after the Reds’ recent defeat, Slot admitted that the Irish goalkeeper’s exit was not purely a footballing decision, but one rooted in a desire for regular first-team football and a fresh challenge away from Alisson Becker’s shadow.

Kelleher, who joined Liverpool’s academy in 2015 and rose through the ranks to become a dependable backup, played a crucial role in several domestic cup runs — including the 2022 Carabao Cup triumph, where his penalty heroics made him a fan favourite.
Despite his strong performances, the 25-year-old made it clear he wanted a new challenge after years of limited minutes. Slot’s comments now confirm that Liverpool reluctantly sanctioned the move out of respect for the player’s ambitions.
> “It wasn’t easy for anyone,” Slot added. “He’s loved in the dressing room, and we all wish him success. Sometimes you have to let players chase their dreams.”
