Mohamed Salah appeared to frustrate teammate Florian Wirtz during Liverpool’s dominant Champions League victory over Eintracht Frankfurt.
The Reds ended their four-game losing streak in emphatic fashion, coming from behind to secure a 5-1 win in Germany. However, the night wasn’t without a moment of tension.
Liverpool made a poor start as Rasmus Kristensen gave Frankfurt an early lead, but Hugo Ekitike equalised against his former club before Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté both scored from corners to make it 3-1 at halftime. In the second half, Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai sealed the victory with two more goals.
Salah, who began the match on the bench, was introduced in the second half and had a golden chance to extend the lead. Instead of passing to Wirtz, who was waiting for an easy tap-in, the Egyptian opted to shoot from a tight angle and was denied by goalkeeper Michael Zetterer.
The decision visibly angered Wirtz, who threw his arms up in frustration after the miss. Fans quickly picked up on the moment, with many criticizing Salah’s choice on social media.
One fan wrote: “Twice in four days Salah refuses to square it for a Wirtz tap-in. So poor.” Another added: “That’s so greedy from Salah — Wirtz was right there for his first Liverpool goal!”
Others labelled the forward “selfish” and accused him of costing Wirtz a standout performance.
Despite missing out on a goal, Wirtz still made his mark, registering two assists for Gakpo and Szoboszlai — his first direct goal contributions in a Liverpool shirt.
The young German will now hope his impressive cameo helps him earn a place in Arne Slot’s starting lineup when Liverpool take on Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday.
