Several Manchester United fans have taken to social media to applaud Jamie Carragher for his recent analysis.
Many United supporters are still smiling after their team’s 2–1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday — and rightly so. Goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire, either side of Cody Gakpo’s equaliser, earned United a crucial three points and their first win at Anfield since January 2016. The result also marked Ruben Amorim’s first back-to-back wins since replacing Erik ten Hag in autumn 2024.
To the surprise of many, former Liverpool captain Carragher was full of admiration for Amorim’s tactics during his segment on Monday Night Football ahead of West Ham United’s clash with Brentford.
The 47-year-old dissected United’s defensive setup, praising their disciplined “low block” which successfully restricted Liverpool’s attacking threats.
“Ruben Amorim got his tactics absolutely spot on at Anfield,” Carragher said on Sky Sports. “That was the only way United could win — by sitting deep and defending compactly.”
He went on to explain how United’s back five remained “narrow and tight under the ball,” adding:
“Another key factor was how no one gambled on balls in behind — it was all about positioning for the second ball. Cunha dropped slightly deeper, and that made the difference.”
Carragher, who made 737 appearances for Liverpool, also pointed out that both Ibrahima Konaté and Virgil van Dijk should have tracked Mbeumo’s 31-yard run more closely for the opening goal.
Despite his strong ties to Liverpool, Carragher’s balanced and detailed breakdown earned praise from Manchester United fans online.
One fan wrote: “I know many people don’t like him, but when it comes to tactical analysis, he’s always spot on.”
Another added: “Jamie Carragher with brilliant analysis of how Man Utd beat Liverpool at Anfield.”
A third commented: “Carragher — that’s top-level punditry.”
Liverpool are next in action against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League on Wednesday, while United host Brighton at Old Trafford on Saturday.
