Liverpool are keen to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi during the January transfer window.
The Reds tried to secure the 25-year-old’s signature in the summer, but the move fell through at the final stage. Although Guehi reportedly completed his medical with the Premier League champions, Crystal Palace blocked the transfer after failing to find a suitable replacement.
Now, Liverpool are expected to return for the England international in the coming months, with Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg confirming their strong and genuine interest. The club is determined to finalize the deal in January.
Both Barcelona and Real Madrid have also been linked with Guehi, but Liverpool’s need for a central defender is particularly urgent following Giovanni Leoni’s season-ending injury. With only three reliable centre-backs left, strengthening the defence has become a priority. The 25-year-old would bring quality and stability to the back line.
Ibrahima Konaté’s inconsistent form this season has only increased Liverpool’s motivation to find competition in that position. Guehi could challenge the Frenchman for a starting spot—and potentially prove to be an upgrade.
Konaté’s contract expires at the end of the season, meaning Liverpool must start planning for the future. Guehi, who has been described as an “exceptional” talent, could be the ideal long-term replacement.
The defender himself may also be attracted by the opportunity to join a top club. With his current deal set to expire next summer, Crystal Palace face mounting pressure to sell him in January rather than risk losing him for free. How the situation develops in the coming months remains to be seen.
