Theo Walcott believes Liverpool can finally break their five-year winless run at Stamford Bridge when they face Chelsea today.
The Reds travel to London for the evening kickoff, aware that they could lose their top spot in the Premier League if Arsenal beat West Ham earlier in the day.
Arne Slot’s side suffered a setback this week after learning that goalkeeper Alisson Becker will be sidelined with injury. However, Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca is also missing several key players, including star man Cole Palmer.
Walcott predicts a Liverpool win
During the latest episode of It’s Called Soccer, Rebecca Lowe asked Walcott and Taylor Twellman for their predictions. Twellman backed a 2-1 Liverpool win, while Walcott enthusiastically responded, “That’s what I wanted! Let’s go for… 2-0. 2-0 to Liverpool.”
Why a win would mean so much
Liverpool last won at Stamford Bridge in September 2020, when Sadio Mane’s quick brace secured a 2-0 victory. Since then, they’ve drawn three consecutive away games against Chelsea and lost their most recent visit five months ago, though that came just after sealing the Premier League title.
Both sides have reasons for optimism and concern. Liverpool’s recent momentum has stalled after back-to-back defeats to Crystal Palace and Galatasaray, while Chelsea haven’t claimed a league win since August and are dealing with multiple absences.
If Liverpool are to end their poor run in west London, they’ll need to deliver a much-improved performance. A victory tonight—especially if Arsenal win earlier—would provide a significant psychological boost for the reigning champions and help restore confidence heading into the international break.
