A former Liverpool player who Arne Slot allowed to leave Anfield is thriving at his new club.
Liverpool’s flawless start to the season came to an end with a 2-1 defeat against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. Despite heavy summer investment with the signings of Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, and two full-backs, the champions have struggled to build rhythm, and some supporters are questioning whether recent sales were too hasty.
Among those departures was Tyler Morton, sold to Lyon for £15 million after making five appearances under Slot last season. The 22-year-old midfielder has made an impressive start in France, even netting his first goal in Lyon’s 1-0 win over Lille. Reflecting on his exit, Morton revealed that Slot made it clear over the summer that he wasn’t part of his plans.
Morton explained: “Jurgen Klopp was the best coach for my development. At that time, I felt ready, and Klopp agreed. He gave me opportunities at the highest level and supported my growth with loan spells. With Arne Slot, I didn’t get the minutes I wanted, but he was honest and open with me, and I knew I had to take another route. Joining Lyon was the best choice.”
Before leaving, Morton had loan stints at Blackburn Rovers (2022/23) and Hull City (2023/24) before returning to Liverpool last season, where he struggled for minutes behind Ryan Gravenberch.
Now flourishing in Ligue 1, Morton’s early form has already earned high praise, with Sky Sports journalist Victor Lefaucheux even likening him to Manchester United star Casemiro.
