Liverpool supporters took to social media to vent their frustrations with Alexis Mac Allister following the club’s Premier League clash with Crystal Palace.
The Reds, reigning champions this season, went into the match boasting a flawless record, having won all five of their opening league fixtures, even if their performances had not been entirely convincing.
Their trip to Selhurst Park was always going to be challenging, with Crystal Palace coming into the game on an impressive 17-match unbeaten run across all competitions, including a Community Shield meeting with Liverpool earlier in the season.
Liverpool looked set to extend their unbeaten league run in dramatic fashion when substitute Federico Chiesa struck in the 87th minute to level the game. However, Eddie Nketiah’s stoppage-time winner in the 97th minute handed Palace all three points, condemning Liverpool to their first defeat of the campaign.
As the final whistle blew, many Liverpool fans focused their criticism on one player in particular: Alexis Mac Allister.
‘Mac Allister Looks Completely Lost’
On X (formerly Twitter), numerous supporters expressed their disappointment with the Argentine’s display. Since arriving from Brighton for £35 million in 2023, Mac Allister has often been one of Liverpool’s most reliable midfielders. However, his performance against Palace highlighted a rocky start to the current season.
One fan described him as looking “absolutely lost,” especially since Luis Díaz and Darwin Núñez left the club, while another claimed they would choose Palace midfielder Adam Wharton over him “any day of the week.”
Other fans were even more direct in their criticism:
“I don’t know if it’s a fitness issue, but Mac Allister has to be dropped now. He hasn’t been good all season.”
“Bradley and Mac Allister starting every week despite being poor is on [Arne] Slot. Jones and Frimpong should be playing instead.”
Mac Allister wasn’t the only player to underperform, with defender Ibrahima Konaté also drawing criticism. Still, given Mac Allister’s previous high standards, it was clear that he was well below his best in South London.
A Tough Night for the Midfielder
Mac Allister lasted just over an hour before being substituted for Curtis Jones in the 65th minute. According to SofaScore, he failed to register a single shot on goal, while he lost both of his ground duels despite winning all of his aerial challenges. He also gave away possession seven times over the course of the match.
With Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch both in strong form and capable of playing in his role, Mac Allister’s place in the starting lineup is coming under increasing scrutiny.
Liverpool’s depth gives manager Arne Slot plenty of quality options, and based on Mac Allister’s struggles at Selhurst Park, a change in midfield may need to happen sooner rather than later.
