Cody Gakpo currently plays alongside some of the Premier League’s top playmakers at Liverpool, yet he believes the club let go of the best passer he’s ever seen.
Manager Arne Slot has no shortage of creative talent at his disposal, with players like the in-form Ryan Gravenberch, versatile Dominik Szoboszlai, and the consistently reliable Alexis Mac Allister. Gakpo himself is also capable of splitting defenses with a well-timed through ball.
Since joining Liverpool, the Dutch forward has settled well and become a key figure in Slot’s revamped squad following a major summer overhaul. However, Gakpo insists that during the recent transfer window, the club parted ways with the most gifted passer he has ever played with.

In a quick-fire interview with GOAL, Gakpo was asked who the best passer he has played alongside or against was. Without hesitation, he named Trent Alexander-Arnold.
The England international spent nearly 22 years at Liverpool, rising through the academy to become a fan favorite. However, his decision to let his contract run down and join Real Madrid on a free transfer last summer caused uproar among supporters. During his time at Anfield, Alexander-Arnold was instrumental in two Premier League title wins and a Champions League triumph, earning a reputation for his extraordinary passing range.
One of his most iconic moments came in the unforgettable 4-0 win over Barcelona in May 2019, when his quick-thinking corner set up Divock Origi. Known for his pinpoint accuracy, he could create chances out of nothing and dictate play with ease.
Trent on His Playmaking Inspirations
Alexander-Arnold has always prioritized passing as the cornerstone of his game. Speaking to Liverpool’s official website, he revealed that he grew up idolizing legendary passers such as Steven Gerrard, Xabi Alonso, David Beckham, and Andrea Pirlo.
“For me, it’s always been about passing,” he explained. “I’ve admired it since I was young and was lucky to grow up watching some incredible players — Gerrard, Alonso, Beckham, Pirlo, and many of the Spanish greats.”
Now at Real Madrid, Alexander-Arnold has experienced a mixed start to life in Spain. Nevertheless, he remains one of Europe’s finest ball-playing full-backs and serves as a model for modern defenders looking to master the art of playmaking.
