Liverpool have provided an update on Hugo Ekitike’s availability following the dramatic conclusion of their Carabao Cup victory against Southampton at Anfield.
The summer signing came off the bench to score the winning goal but was then sent off for removing his shirt during the celebration.
This second yellow card results in a one-match domestic suspension, ruling the French forward out of the upcoming Premier League game against Crystal Palace.
The club confirmed the suspension on liverpoolfc.com, stating that Ekitike “will be suspended for Liverpool’s Premier League fixture at Crystal Palace on Saturday.”
This leaves the manager with a decision to make regarding the attacking lineup.
Alexander Isak, who scored his first Liverpool goal earlier that evening, is the most likely candidate to lead the attack in south London despite not being fully match-fit.
Liverpool’s squad depth will be tested after the cup drama.
The team’s rebuild under the Dutch coach has already faced scrutiny this season, with injuries and rotation putting pressure on resources.
Adding to selection concerns, debutant Giovanni Leoni suffered a late knee injury in the same match, and the manager confirmed they are still awaiting an assessment of the 18-year-old’s condition.
Liverpool made significant summer signings, including record British transfers Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, to add variety in attack.
However, losing Ekitike, who has scored five goals since joining from Eintracht Frankfurt, is an unfortunate disruption ahead of a tough trip to Selhurst Park.
