Hugo Ekitike has apologized to Liverpool supporters following his unusual red card during the 2-1 victory over Southampton on Tuesday night.
The French forward replaced Alexander Isak at halftime and scored the winning goal late in the game. However, already on a yellow card, he received a second booking for taking off his shirt while celebrating, resulting in his dismissal.
Jeremie Frimpong looked shocked as he saw his teammate was about to be sent off, and some analysts criticized Ekitike’s actions as a moment of “pure foolishness,” which now means he will miss Liverpool’s upcoming Premier League match at Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Ekitike’s apology after the red card
Shortly after the game, Ekitike expressed regret on Instagram for his avoidable red card, admitting that his emotions got the better of him after scoring.
The 23-year-old wrote on his story: “I was so excited to help the team secure another win at home in my first Carabao Cup game. My emotions got the best of me tonight. I apologize to the entire Red family. Thanks to the fans who always support us and my teammates who earned this victory!”
Hoping Ekitike learns from the costly sending off
Liverpool manager Arne Slot openly criticized Ekitike’s sending off, calling it “stupid” and there will likely be a serious conversation behind the scenes alongside the coach’s public disappointment.
While it’s understandable that Ekitike was frustrated by the tough free kick that led to his first yellow card, both cautions could have been avoided, especially the second after he was already on thin ice.
At 23, he should have been more aware of the situation. It’s frustrating to lose him for such a challenging match over an unnecessary red card—not a tactical foul or self-sacrifice for the team.
This is a hard but important lesson for Ekitike, and hopefully he’ll control his emotions better in the future, whether scoring late winners or reacting to unfavorable decisions.
Despite this lapse, we shouldn’t overlook his impressive start at Liverpool, having scored five goals in just eight games as he quickly adapts to English football.
