A former Arsenal academy player is currently in an induced coma following a brain injury sustained during a football match.
Billy Vigar played for Arsenal’s Under-21 team until July 2024 before moving to Hastings United. Last month, he transferred to Chichester City on a free transfer, having also previously been with Derby County and Eastbourne Borough.
Tragically, Vigar is now in a critical condition after reportedly hitting a concrete wall during Chichester City’s Isthmian League Premier Division game against Wingate and Finchley last weekend.
Chichester City did not disclose the exact circumstances of the 21-year-old Worthing native’s injury in their post-match statement.
“Billy has suffered a serious brain injury and is currently in an induced coma in intensive care, receiving the best possible medical treatment,” the club said.
“It is too early to predict the outcome, and even if he recovers, the road ahead will be long and challenging.”
Chichester City currently sits eighth in the Isthmian League Premier Division following a 0-0 draw with Wingate and Finchley.
During the 2023/2024 season, Vigar scored twice in 32 appearances for Eastbourne Borough.
Arsenal issued a statement expressing their support, wishing their former player a speedy recovery. “Everyone at Arsenal sends love and support to Billy and his family during this difficult time,” they said.
Other non-league teams, such as Brentwood Town FC, have also expressed their sympathy: “Our thoughts are with Billy and his family during this sensitive and difficult time. We’re all hoping for his strength and full recovery.”
Meanwhile, Arsenal played in the Premier League on Sunday, ending in a draw against Manchester City. Erling Haaland gave City the lead in the first half, and despite a strong defensive effort, they looked set to secure the win.
However, late in the game, Gabriel Martinelli’s chipped goal over Italy’s goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma earned Arsenal a valuable point.
This draw leaves Mikel Arteta’s side second in the league, five points behind leaders Liverpool after five matches.
