Alexis Mac Allister has revealed that he and his Liverpool teammates were growing frustrated with the drawn-out transfer saga involving Alexander Isak before the Swedish striker’s high-profile move. Isak, who wanted to join the Premier League champions, was caught in a summer-long battle between Liverpool and Newcastle United. The deal was only finalized on deadline day after both clubs agreed on a British-record £125 million fee. During this period, Isak was separated from Newcastle’s first team during pre-season, which left him lacking match fitness upon his arrival at Anfield.
Isak made his Liverpool debut in Wednesday’s 3-2 Champions League win against Atletico Madrid, playing just under an hour. He was substituted while the Reds were leading 2-1, before captain Virgil van Dijk scored a late winner to secure the victory. Under Arne Slot, Liverpool have gained attention for clinching wins through a series of late goals in their early title defense matches.
Isak’s signing was part of a major spending spree at Liverpool, balanced by several key departures, including Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Harvey Elliott, Ben Gannon Doak, Tyler Morton, Jarell Quansah, and Caoimhin Kelleher.
Despite the ongoing discussions about Liverpool’s significant investment, Mac Allister is thrilled to have Isak on the squad and believes he will be a valuable asset. “At first, the process dragged on too long, and we got a bit tired of it,” Mac Allister told TNT Sports (via Liverpool Echo), referencing the prolonged transfer. “But everyone knows what kind of player he is. He’s going to be very important, and we’re happy to have him here.”
He also acknowledged Newcastle’s likely dissatisfaction with the outcome but said, “Maybe the other club isn’t happy, but that’s how football works. They paid a lot, so I think it’s good for both clubs. It’s good for him because it’s what he wanted, and we’re happy because we know the quality he brings. We’ve even struggled against him a few times.”
Liverpool will face Everton in the Merseyside derby on Saturday at 12:30 PM, aiming to extend their lead in the Premier League. The Toffees will be eager to disrupt Liverpool’s title defense after winning all four of their opening matches.
It’s still unclear if Isak will make his Premier League debut soon, given his interrupted pre-season.
