Matt Beard, the former manager of Liverpool Women’s team who led the club to consecutive Women’s Super League titles, has passed away at the age of 47. Liverpool expressed their shock and sadness at his sudden death. Beard secured back-to-back league championships in 2013 and 2014 during his time with the Reds.
The club shared their condolences, stating: “Everyone at Liverpool sends their heartfelt thoughts to Matt’s family and friends during this difficult time. Matt was not only a highly dedicated and successful coach but also a person known for his integrity and kindness. He will be fondly remembered by all who worked with him.”
Beard became Liverpool Women’s manager in 2012 and quickly delivered two league titles. He later managed West Ham Women, guiding them to an FA Cup final, and also held the managerial position at Bristol City Women. Additionally, he had a stint with Chelsea Women. Beard returned to Liverpool in 2021, leading the team back to the top division by winning the Women’s Championship, before departing in February.
Liverpool acknowledged Beard’s “important contributions to the club’s progress and the many memorable achievements throughout his time with the team.”
Non-league club Eastbourne Borough offered their sympathies to Beard’s family, particularly his brother Mark Beard, who is also involved in football. They sent their best wishes to Mark and his loved ones.
Dorking Wanderers also paid tribute, expressing their sorrow and sending condolences to the Beard family, remembering Matt as a true gentleman and friend.
The Women’s Super League shared a message on social media, expressing deep condolences to Beard’s family and praising his significant role in the advancement of women’s football. They noted he will be missed by the entire football community.
