David Moyes has pointed out the significant financial gap between Everton and Liverpool, noting that the Reds spent more on a single player this summer than Everton did on their entire squad. Despite this, he acknowledged that Liverpool have earned the right to spend big through their consistent success.
Although Everton had their highest-ever net spend during the transfer window—free from the financial restrictions that had limited them in recent years—it still paled in comparison to Liverpool’s record-breaking £446 million outlay, the most any English club has spent in a single window.
Ahead of the 247th Merseyside Derby, Moyes was asked whether such spending left him feeling envious. He replied, “You have to earn that position. You have to win and be part of the major competitions to generate that kind of money.” He drew on his experience at West Ham, explaining how playing in Europe over three consecutive seasons allowed the club to increase spending and bring in more revenue. “Liverpool have earned that,” he added.
Moyes also referenced Liverpool manager Arne Slot, saying: “I heard Arne defending himself and he’s done well to bring in a lot of money. But still, I think they’ve spent more on one player than we have on our entire squad,” as reported by the Liverpool Echo.
He accepted the current state of affairs and his responsibility to help close the gap between the two clubs: “It gives you a sense of where the game is and where the clubs stand. My job is to try and narrow the difference. Right now, Liverpool are champions and strong contenders for the Champions League. We’re Everton—coming off a few tough seasons—and we’re trying to rebuild, but closing that gap is no easy task.”
Moyes continued: “They’ve signed some top players. Over the years, Jurgen Klopp’s teams have been outstanding, and Arne Slot has made a great start in his first year at the club. Liverpool have continued to strengthen, but I believe we’ve improved too. From my perspective, I’m focused on us—on improving and getting better wherever possible.”
With Liverpool winning all four of their Premier League games this season thanks to late goals, Moyes acknowledged how important it is for top teams to have strong squads that can finish games effectively.
“Liverpool have shown at times how strong they are, but also moments of weakness when they’ve conceded,” he said. “We’ll need to take advantage of those situations. Last year at Anfield, we lost to a controversial offside goal. We want to push them again—maybe this time things go our way.”
He also emphasized the importance of squad depth, echoing Mikel Arteta’s term of “finishers” for substitutes. “Top teams rely on their bench to make an impact. We’re trying to do the same—having players who, even if they don’t start, can come on and help finish games.”
