New footage has emerged showing a Liverpool fan taunting Diego Simeone just before the Atletico Madrid manager received a red card during their dramatic late defeat at Anfield.
Liverpool kicked off their Champions League campaign with an exciting 3-2 win over the La Liga side, who battled back from a 2-0 deficit thanks to goals from Mo Salah and Andy Robertson.
Marcos Llorente, whose dog is named Anfield, scored twice again at Anfield to level the match, but Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk scored a stoppage-time winner.
As has happened before, Simeone’s emotions got the better of him. Video clips show him sprinting to his left and engaging in a heated exchange with Liverpool fans. Security and stewards held him back while members of his coaching staff supported him, but the referee ultimately issued Simeone a red card for his conduct.
Multiple camera angles reveal Simeone trying to retaliate against the fans, who clearly enjoyed the confrontation. One of his coaches threw a water bottle and appeared to spit in their direction, while another made an offensive gesture.
One fan, in particular, seemed to provoke Simeone more than the others, laughing directly at him. After the game, that fan posted on X joking, “Do I get the assist?” referring to Van Dijk’s winner.
The same fan was also seen reacting strongly when Atletico equalised in the 81st minute. As Llorente’s deflected volley beat Alisson Becker, Simeone, players, and staff celebrated together. In the background, the fan wearing a bright green shirt shouted angrily at those on the pitch and made an offensive gesture toward the Atletico side.
After the match, Simeone addressed his dismissal, sharing his side of the story and insisting the fan should face consequences for provoking him.
He said, “My reaction was unjustifiable, but do you know what it’s like to be insulted for 90 minutes, then to turn around after the opponent scores and still be insulted? It’s not easy.
“The referee told me he understood me. I hope Liverpool can address this and that the person responsible will be held accountable.
“There were insults and gestures throughout the game. I know I have to stay calm and endure it because of my position.
“I’m not going to go into the specifics of the insults. I have to stay professional and keep my place. I know what happened behind the manager’s bench.”
However, when asked what exactly the referee said to him, Simeone declined to answer and quickly left the press conference.
