Wright Suffers Injury Blow in Liverpool UEFA Youth League Opener
Liverpool’s UEFA Youth League campaign got off to a worrying start as new signing Will Wright sustained an injury during their clash with Atletico Madrid at Kirkby. The 17-year-old forward, who arrived from Salford City in August, went down after a challenge and needed extended treatment before being stretchered off the pitch.
According to Ian Doyle on X, the young striker “appeared to jar his knee” in the incident. The Liverpool ECHO’s chief writer noted the severity of the situation, stating Wright had to be taken off on a stretcher following a lengthy delay due to the injury.
The setback is a tough one for Wright, who had only recently settled into life at Kirkby, having made his senior debut for Salford City last season. He had featured in the EFL Trophy against Wolves U21s and made appearances in both the FA Cup and League Two before making the move to Liverpool.
Wright’s signing was part of a broader recruitment effort aimed at strengthening both the present and future of the club. While the first team saw the addition of talents like Florian Wirtz, youth prospects such as goalkeeper Armin Pecsi and defender Giovanni Leoni joined Wright as part of the next generation. His prolific scoring record — over 50 goals across youth levels — had caught the attention of top clubs like Arsenal and Manchester City.
Seen as a key player for Rob Page’s U21 side this season, hopes are now that Wright’s injury isn’t as serious as initially feared. Liverpool’s academy staff have experience managing similar challenges, and if his recovery goes well, Wright’s path to the senior squad remains very much intact.
