Liverpool’s UEFA Youth League campaign started with worry on Merseyside after new signing Will Wright had to leave the game injured during the match against Atletico Madrid at Kirkby. The 17-year-old forward, who joined from Salford City in August, was hurt after a challenge and needed extensive treatment before being taken off on a stretcher.
Wright’s injury was a setback in Liverpool’s Youth League opener.
According to Ian Doyle on X, the young striker “seemed to jar his knee during a challenge” and had to exit the field.
Doyle, Liverpool ECHO’s chief writer, commented: “Bad news for summer signing Will Wright, who required lengthy treatment for an injury in the UEFA Youth League game against Atletico Madrid and was stretchered off.”
This is a tough break for the young player, who recently started his journey at Kirkby after making his senior debut with Salford last season.
Wright previously played in the EFL Trophy against Wolves U21s and appeared in both the FA Cup and League Two before moving to Anfield.
Liverpool’s long-term strategy faces an early test with this injury. Wright’s signing was part of a broader recruitment plan that included attackers Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak. The club also secured Florian Wirtz to boost the first team, while Wright joined the next generation alongside goalkeeper Armin Pecsi and Giovanni Leoni.
Wright was brought in after scoring over 50 goals at youth level and drawing interest from Arsenal and Manchester City.
Seen as a promising talent in Rob Page’s U21 squad this season, hopes now rest on the injury not being as serious as initially feared.
Liverpool’s academy staff have experience managing such setbacks, and Wright’s path to the senior team remains open if he recovers well.
