Edwards set for new contract as FSG outline clear strategy with Slot and Hughes

Liverpool’s record-breaking summer transfer activity was no accident, as Fenway Sports Group (FSG) has now entered discussions to extend the contract of the key figure behind the scenes — Michael Edwards. According to Graeme Bailey of TBR Football, Edwards, who serves as the club’s CEO of Football, is currently in negotiations with FSG over a new deal.

FSG Reinforce Trust in Edwards After Landmark Summer

Bailey reports that FSG hold Edwards, sporting director Richard Hughes, and head coach Arne Slot in the highest regard, considering them one of the strongest management teams in football. They’re eager to secure their services well beyond their current contracts, which run until 2027.

“FSG are extremely satisfied with the current setup — they’re big admirers of Edwards and credit him for the crucial appointments of Hughes and Slot, both of whom have significantly contributed to Liverpool’s success,” said Bailey.

This confidence was reflected in the summer window, during which Liverpool invested £450 million — a British record — including marquee signings like Alexander Isak for £125 million and Florian Wirtz for £116 million. Other additions included Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, and Jeremie Frimpong.

Edwards’ Role in Liverpool’s Multi-Club Strategy

A major part of Edwards’ responsibilities includes overseeing FSG’s growing multi-club model, with clubs like Malaga reportedly involved. While a previous attempt to acquire Bordeaux fell through, Edwards remains focused on expanding this network while maintaining Liverpool’s success at the top level.

Earlier this year, Edwards turned down an offer from Saudi side Al-Hilal, reaffirming his commitment to the Liverpool project. His joint decision with FSG to appoint Arne Slot last summer ultimately led the club to its 20th league title — a testament to his leadership.

This contract development aligns with FSG’s broader vision for the club and mirrors a trend among European ownership groups embracing multi-club models.
