Liverpool hope to sign Alexander Isak before the summer transfer window shuts, but the move hinges on Newcastle’s actions. If history had been different, Liverpool might not have stood a chance to secure the 25-year-old striker.
Isak’s move to Liverpool seems increasingly likely as Newcastle work to find a replacement striker. Once they succeed, it’s expected they will allow the Premier League champions to complete the deal.
Widely regarded as one of the best strikers in the world, Isak would be an outstanding signing for Liverpool. They might even consider themselves lucky, given the Swedish forward could have ended up at Real Madrid or Borussia Dortmund instead.
Liverpool.com uncovered Isak’s near move to Real Madrid in 2017, when he almost joined the Spanish giants rather than Dortmund. Years later, Dortmund could have re-signed him thanks to a buy-back clause after he was sold to Real Sociedad, from whom Newcastle eventually acquired him.
In the coming weeks, Isak’s future will become clearer. Although Newcastle reportedly don’t want to sell their star striker before the window closes, they are likely to soften their position if they secure two new forwards beforehand.
That said, Liverpool still face challenges in closing the deal, with Newcastle demanding £150 million for the striker, insisting the Premier League champions meet that valuation to reach an agreement.
